Costs are rising: Finnish Customs is waiting for a decision on the border with Russia
The head of the Finnish Customs Service is calling on the authorities to decide whether they will open the border with the Russian Federation or keep it closed permanently.
Additional expenses of the Finnish Border Guard Service related to the closure of the border with the Russian Federation amount to about 450,000 euros per month.
The Customs Service has to spend money to transfer personnel from border posts on the eastern border to other parts of Finland. The money is spent on per diem and travel expenses of the staff.
Customs has also had to prepare for the introduction of the emergency law, for example by renting sea containers in which asylum seekers could be interviewed.
Customs has so far decided not to lay off workers because it would be stranded without experienced staff when border crossings on the eastern border are opened. With the exception of the southeastern region, there are no major population centers near the border crossings where it would be easy to recruit or train new people.
Sami Rakshit, head of the Customs Service, notes that the patience of the staff is not infinite, and it must be decided whether to open the border or to close it permanently.
In turn, Jari Nieminen of the Customs Union believes that the government should consider opening one of the border crossings and see if there will be a large flow of migrants from third countries traveling through Russia. Otherwise, there could be a question of cutting the customs service's staff and laying off employees, which could then become a problem when opening border crossings with Russia.
